Depth of Field

Depth of field is the amount of space in front of or behind an object, that appears to be in focus. Image format size also affects the depth of field. When focusing in the depth of field everything in front and behind the focus point become less sharp and more blurred.

Focal length does not affect depth of field, it is used to make the image bigger or smaller which will blur the image if you get to close.

Exposure

Exposure is the amount of light allowed to fall on the photographic medium. IF you have a longer lasting exposure you will be letting more light in and whatever you are taking a picture of better remain still or it will be blurry. If you use a shorter exposure it will take in less light and that is when you need to use the flash. You can set the shutter to be more open or more closed and you can determine the amount of light that is let in. Aperture is a hole or opening through which light is emitted. F-Stop is the focal length divided by the diameter of the lens.

These are four pictures of the same flower but from different angles around it. These pictures are all unique because they all show how big the differences can be by taking the pictures from different angles.

What Did I Learn About Cameras

I learn that the image needs to have a long exposure time if it has a small hole
I also learned that you CAN make a camera.

How to Make and use a Pinhole Camera

Materials

  • One of those cylindrical Quaker Oatmeal boxes. Try and get one that's around 7" tall.
  • Some heavy paper, like construction paper, but not that cheap shit from junior high art class.
  • Elmer's Glue.
  • Krazy Glue.
  • An aluminum can.
  • A pin.
  • Black spray paint.
  • A ruler.
  • A very sharp razor or X-Acto.
  • Some light grit sandpaper, although griptape will work in a pinch.
  • A marker
  • Some resin-coated, medium contrast, black and white photographic paper, size 5" by 7". I like to use Ilford satin finish. It's about $8.50 for a pack of 25.

First Take the Oatmeal can and measure it from top to bottom. Find the middle and make a square and cut out around the square with the X-Acto Knife. Line the inside with black paper.

Cut a hole to the exact outline of the square underneath the oatmeal guys chin. Cut the Arizona ice tea into a 3' 2' and poke a hole in it with the pin and put tape with the adhesive facing up behind the cut out.
Tape that to the inside. Make a shutter track and make a shutter like in the picture bellow.

Now go to a dark room and put photo paper inside and make sure no light gets to it before or after the picture is taken. To use this make sure it is light tight and open the shutter for a twenty minute exposure. Then develop using a dark room and chemicals. Make sure the photo paper does not see light at all until completely developed. And then you are done. Good Job.

What I hope to gain

What I hope to gain from This photography class is the ability to edit and to take quality pictures.
